about

January 2009 was spent recording our debut album 'Until The Earth Begins To Part' at Monnow Valley Studios, Monmouth, and released on 4AD at the start of June that same year.

In between, we put on an intimate 90 capacity home-town show with our pals Woodenbox at the Bedlam Theatre, Edinburgh at the end of March. We'd be kidding ourselves if we said we were road-testing the new album - these songs had already had many, many live outings over the previous two years! But it was a chance to showcase the final work, and have a party with the friends, family and fans who'd helped us along the way.

Fortunately, our live sound engineer Simon Kasprowicz captured the whole thing for posterity, resulting in this here live album. Our pals Matthew and Kate at Song, By Toad also filmed the show, and you can still find videos for most of the set along with an interview over at the SBT Vimeo page here: vimeo.com/4993547

The live album features every song on the debut album, including the never more appropriate 'If The News Makes You Sad...', plus some very rarely performed b-sides and a couple of tracks from the companion Out On The Water EP that came out towards the end of that year.

If you've been a properly long-term fan, then most excitingly this live album also features the first ever formal release of our 'lost song', Lovers' Pacts! It was a mainstay of our set between 2007-2009, and we'd tried to record a studio version of it a few times, including at Monnow Valley. But the studio takes never seemed to quite capture the raw chaos of the live version, so sadly it didn't make the final cut for Until The Earth... . If you've been waiting 13 years to FINALLY have a recording of this song, then thanks for your patience!

The whole set is rounded off with the very first performance of A Darkness Rises Up - the first record not even out yet and here's us already laying the groundwork for the second! (It's the only track from the show that's already been released on our B-Sides, Live, Rarities album, which funnily enough is also available here on Bandcamp. You should probably pick up that one too while you're here...)

The song came together out of nowhere in the practice room a couple of days before the show, but we didn't have any plans to play it in the set. We were heavy into our 'no encore' phase, and still are if we can at all help it, but everyone was in such a good mood by the end of the show we threw caution to the wind and gave it a bash un-rehearsed. Apart from obviously not having any proper lyrics yet and the later very sensible decision to ditch the glockenspoil, it's surprisingly close to the final studio version we recorded in 2010!

"So, here it is..." - the live record of Until The Earth Begins To Part we should probably have released last summer for the album's 10th birthday, but didn't get our arses into gear in time. If you weren't there now's your chance to enjoy it fresh. If you were there we hope it brings back some happy memories of the times when we took going out to see live shows for granted.

Thanks again for all your support!
BR x
